A native of Walnutgrove and resident of Jersey at the time of his induction, who recieved the French Croix de Guerre with gilt star for his daring July 1, 1918, during the attach of Vaux. A member of Co. G., 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, East was serving as ammunition carrier at the time. " He rushed ahead of his party which was attacked by an enemy machine gun, and killed the gunners" the citation declares.

Enlisted at age 27 in Monroe, GA.  He received his Honorable Discharge 7 JAN 1919 at Camp McClellan, AL. He was married to BERTHA MAE JONES also from Walton County and they had 4 children born in Atlanta, GA, prior to moving to Detroit, MI. In all, they had 11 children before he passed away 5 JAN 1971 in his residence in Port Huron, MI.  It would be a great honor for me to pass along this information concerning my grandfather whom I have never had the privilege to meet. We are a proud military family serving our country faithfully.

Enlisted 19 DEC 1917 in Monroe GA.  He was discharged 23 MAR 1919.  He served in France with A.E.F. 15 APR 1918 to 05 MAY 1919
with the Q.M. detachment 82nd Division.  His infantry commander was Major Wm. T. BROCK.  His Infantry Detachment was 1st Liet. J.P. RYAN.    He was born 06 DEC 1887 in High Shoals, the youngest of 10 children.  He was 30 years old when he went
into the service.  He died 07 SEP 1953 in Atlanta, GA; buried in the Covington Mill Cemetery, Newton Co., GA. He married  Beulah SMITH of Covington, GA & they had 2 daughters & 3 granddaughters.
