He is buried
in the Mt. Carmel cemetery in Mansfield. He was married to Frances
Johnson of
Mansfield who currently lives with her daughter, Patricia McVeigh, in Brunswick.
Served
in the Army during WWII with an artillery unit from December 1942- September
1945. Fought in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Harris is
my father.

Born 29 MAY 1907--died 17 APR1981 in Walton Co.,GA; Walton Co. native,
he was the descendent of the Hearn family pioneer settlors. The son
of George Justus
HEARN (15 OCT 1867- 3 JUN 1942) & Leona Zader Brewer HEARN (15 MAR
1869- 28 JUL 1949) & the husband of Nell Potts HEARN (18 Sept
1908- 31 Aug
1992). He was a member of the Georgia National Guard
for more than 4 decades,
first joining the Walton Co. Howitzer CO, 121st Infantry Regiment, 27 JUL 1925.
In this unit he served in every enlisted grade through first Sgt. &
was elected & commissioned
as a 2nd Lt. 19 FEB 1932. He remained an officer in the unit
during the
redesignation to the Coast Guard Artillery Corps & was inducted into
active federal
service 25 NOV 1940 as a Capt. & as commander of Battery B 214th Coast Artillery
Corps, Antiaircraft. The unit went to training at Fort Stewart, GA
for a one year
term of Federal Service, however such was extended and three weeks after
Pearl Harbor,
he began his tour of duty until 9 MAR 1946 serving for 5 years+ during World
War II. Shortly thereafter he was assigned to the Army Reserves &
upon reactivation
of the Georgia National Guard became Executive Officer of the 108th AAA
Brigade. When the Korean crisis arose he was once again pressed into
Federal Service
on 14 AUG 1950 & promoted to the rank of Brigadier General as Com- manding
Officer of this Brigade. Upon his release from this tour of duty
via some unusual
political maneuvering by the then Governor Herman Talmadge of Georgia & Senator
Richard B. RUSSELLl he was named Adjutant General of Georgia & began these
duties with the rank of Major General. He continued as Commanding
General of
the 108th Brigade & was subsequently appointed by 3 succeeding Governor's
of Georgia
for consecutive 4 year terms to serve as Georgia's Adjutant General &
as the states
Civil Defense Director retiring in 1971 as a Lt. General US Army.
He holds many
high campaign & service medals benefitting his lengthy service to his
state & nation.
He likewise held many civic honors, serving as councilman & Mayor of
the City
of Monroe, as Deacon & elder of the First Christian Church of Monroe, Worshipful
Master of Generous Warren Lodge No. 20, F&AM, member of the Walton
Co. Hospital Board, commander of the Monroe American Legion Post, State Commander
of the American Legion & the organizer of the Loganville American Post in
Loganville which is today Georgia's largest and best Legion Post. &
was the owner &
operator of Hearn Hardware Co. which his family began in 1904 ,was the
owner & operator
of Hearn's Gifts & Hearn's Monroe Photo, Was a Bank Director
of Georgia Central
Bank in Social Circle & Monroe & was in numerous Civic & governmental organizations
throughout the County, the State & the Nation. On 18 SEP 1929
he married
Nell POTTS of Mansfield, GA & was the father of George Justus HEARN Cook
HEARN & grandfather of Cheryl Anne Hearn GREELEY, Vickie Hearn
